The Battle of the Department of Mysteries took place in June of 1996. When Harry Potter received a vision of his godfather, Sirius Black, being tortured in the Hall of Prophecy, he and 5 other members of the D.A. set off for the Department of Mysteries to save him. When they arrived Harry led them to the room where he had seen Sirius being tortured. They discovered that Sirius was in fact not there, but there were thousands of these spun glass balls, and Ron found one with Harry's name on it. When Harry picked it up, 12 Death Eaters appeared out of nowhere. They revealed to Harry that his vision was a ruse used to lure him to the Hall of Prophecy to retrieve the Prophecy that he had just picked up. In an attempt to save his friends from his stupidity, Harry concocted a plan to smash the shelves to cover their escape. On his order, the 5 other D.A. members (Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Neville Longbottom, Luna Lovegood, and Ginny Weasley) used Reductor Curses on the balls to create a diversion. They ran for it. During the fighting Harry, Hermione, and Neville were separated from the others. Hermione was seriously injured and Neville had his face kicked in by Dolohov. The others were all incapacitated during the fight. When the Death Eaters had Harry cornered, 5 members of the Order of the Phoenix arrived (Sirius Black, Alastor Moody, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Nymphadora Tonks, and Remus Lupin). Fighting broke out again. Many on both sides were injured. Dumbledore arrived soon after and the fighting stopped except for one pair, Sirius Black and Bellatrix Lestrange. Bellatrix hit Sirius with some curse that pushed him through the Veil in front of which he had been standing. Harry pursued Bellatrix into the Atrium intent on avenging Sirius' death. He and Bellatrix were joined by Voldemort who attempted to kill Harry, but he was saved by Dumbledore. Dumbledore proceeded to duel with Voldemort which ended in a draw. Voldemort tried to possess Harry, but could not when Harry focused on his grief for Sirius.
